Pro Tip: Pre-drill the screw holes – it will prevent splitting and will allow countersinking for inserting wood plugs later.
It all starts with a plan. Who will be sitting in the chairs? Are they for kids? Do you want adult-sized chairs with some extra room in the seat? Then you’ll need more space and more space means more wood panels.
• 2 full pallets about 30 inches square (1 for the chair seat and 1 for the chair back) • 4 pallet support boards about 12 inches long (you can use 2×4s if you don’t have any support boards on hand)
Screw through the face of the stiles and into the edges of the top rail to fasten them together.
Now it’s time to install the seat slats. Start at the front with the front edge overhanging the front crosspiece by about 1⁄4“. Put one screw in each end and use two screws equally spaced attaching it to the front crosspiece.
Before deciding on a chair material, consider how much maintenance you’re willing to put into the chairs. It might be worth spending the extra money for teak or polywood to minimize your maintenance requirements. If you’re willing to refinish the wood every year and keep the chairs covered when they’re not in use, you can get an inexpensive set of Adirondack chairs.

As with all furniture, Adirondack chairs do have a weight capacity on them. This capacity will vary depending on which model you go with. However, finding out that information can be harder then you think, with not every company being upfront about it. For me, this usually means they have an industry-standard weight capacity of between 200 and 220 pounds.
This is a relatively lightweight Adirondack chair at 20 pounds, but that doesn't mean it won't get thrown around or knocked over in bad weather like high winds. It's substantial and well-built enough to hold its own in many conditions, and the weatherproof and rust-resistant elements ensure that the force of nature won't compromise the value of your piece of furniture.
This is a bit of a tangent from my main focus but I feel its pertinent to the process. I always, always recommend Sunbrella Fabrics. They are the best outdoor materials you can find and they use Tenara® Sewing Threads. Sunbrella originally made materials for marine boats and then applied this same technology to outdoor furniture. Watch what happens when this 3 year old dirt-caked sofa is cleaned with a pressure washer.
Abram would build a chair and give it away as a promotion for the show and I’d build a duplicate as a project for the Popular Woodworking readers. Perfect!
Still Wendy. Those of us in BC were not supposed to travel at all. It was against the law to move outside your region. But it was against the recommendations to travel to cabins, etc.
There are a range of designs & styles available with the Adirondack chair manufacturers. Some people believe that there is a specific quality and design that makes these Adirondack chairs a must-have household item.
